Our homes should be our sanctuaries, a place to relax, unwind, and simply breathe. When you have a warm and safe space, no matter how big or small, it is incredible. The right space, particularly a warm and cozy one, can feel like a good hug when you need it most.
Colors
The power of colour is incredible. They can add so much to a room, including warmth. Colours that add warmth and comfort to spaces are colours in the rich brown tones, soft blush pinks, and colours channelling a desert oasis. Think about the warmth of the sunset, the comfort of a hot chocolate, the warmth of the desert and all the soft beiges, peaches, and sandy creams.
When adding your comforting, cozy, warm, and inviting colours think about adding layers of colours (just like the marshmallows on your hot chocolate). This can be done by picking a primary colour for your wall and layering in other colours using furniture and textures.
Textures
Using textures, and layers, can help make your home and spaces feel cozy. A soft cozy rugunderfoot, a big squishy pillow on your reading chair or sofa, and a throw blanket can all add literal warmth, but also make you feel warmer through their visual and physical texture appeal.
Textures are more than just about textiles and rugs, it’s also about adding artwork (at eye level) and using textures in accessories like a rattan or wicker basket, or woven storage bins.
Scents
A small subtle factor to making your house homier, your space cozier, and your room more inviting, is by using scents. A diffuser and scented candles not only provide a comforting ritual in selecting the scent, lighting or setting up, and enjoying. You can use scents to calm, to revitalize, to invite creativity, and more. Bonus: adding in a house plant no only helps clean and purify air, but also adds visual interest (see texture above).
Lighting
Lighting is one of the small touches that can help make a house a home. Forget using just the ‘big light’, to make a room or space feel more intimate, cozy, welcoming, and friendly the best trick is to use lighting. Warm interior design comes from not only choosing warm colours and textures, but also selecting the right lighting and being liberal with your lamps. While many people have a clear preference between one type of lightbulb to another, say daylight versus soft white, the trick with creating warm lighting is being consistent. Don’t mix and match your bulbs, mix and match your accessories. Having your ‘big light’ lighting on dimmers is another great way to add extra warmth to your space.
With warm colours and some thought to textures and lighting, you can transform any nook, cranny, space, and place into a warm and comforting place to relax, work, sleep, or read.
