1. En savoir plus sur les symboles

There are icons to help you with your washing experience. In fact, on the inside of almost every garment (and even on some decorative items) you'll find a handy label giving care instructions. These icons or washing symbols are the key to a successful wash.

Among the useful information these symbols convey are the ideal water temperature, whether an item should be dry-cleaned or not, whether it can go into the washer and, if so, at what temperature, or whether it should be hand-washed.

Familiarizing yourself with these symbols will make it much easier for you to care for your clothes properly.

Pro tip: if the words "dry clean only" or "hand wash only" are an obstacle for you, be sure to consult the labels BEFORE you buy.

2. Learn more about stains

Stains come in all shapes and sizes, and so do their solutions. Some stains need hot water, others cold. The best way to treat stains is to tackle them as soon as they occur, rather than letting them sit. But since we know that life is hectic and doesn't follow a fixed schedule, we've rounded up the best solutions for the most common stains below.

Wine - Red wine stains are problematic, but not impossible to remove. Here's how to treat and remove red wine stains from clothes and tablecloths:

1 Rinse with cold water to remove most of the stain.

2 Apply an enzyme-based detergent to the stain and leave for a few minutes.

3 Wash at the hottest temperature the garment will allow. Add a little oxygen bleach or chlorine bleach for white cottons to help remove dark stains.

Blood - Here's how to remove blood stains:

1 Rinse fresh blood in cold water as soon as possible.

2 Soak the stain in cold water with an enzyme-based detergent for 30 minutes or more.

3 If a stain remains, apply a small amount of detergent directly to the stain and wash in lukewarm or cold water with an oxygen bleach.

Grass and dirt - Grass and dirt are part of life, especially with young children. To remove grass and soil stains, follow these two simple steps:

1 Rub an enzyme-based detergent directly onto the stain. Gently work into the fibers.

2 Wash in the hottest water safe for the garment with an enzyme-based detergent. Use an oxygen or chlorine bleach for white cottons.

Coffee - For coffee lovers, this is probably a common stain, but it's easy to remove.

1 Rinse with cold water to remove as much of the stain as possible.

2 Apply an enzyme-based detergent to the stain and leave for a few minutes.

3 Wash in the hottest water safe for the garment. Add an oxygen bleach or chlorine bleach for white cottons to help remove dark stains.

Oil - The important thing with oil stains is to act quickly. It's not easy to get rid of this type of stain, but it can be done.

1 Dab gently with a paper towel to remove as much oil as possible. Scrape off excess oil with a butter knife if necessary.

2 Gently rub the stain with liquid dishwashing soap (for hand washing), a stain pre-treatment product or an enzyme-based liquid detergent and leave for 10 minutes. If you use liquid dishwashing soap, be sure to thoroughly rinse off the soap before placing the item in the washer.

3 Rinse or wash in the washer in the hottest water recommended on the care label.

4 Air dry. Never put fabric that has been soiled with oil in the dryer, as no washer can completely remove the oil and this could cause a fire. Heat can set in stains that have not been completely removed.

Chocolate - Here's how to remove chocolate stains quickly and easily:

1 Remove any excess with a sharp knife or spoon.

2 Rinse the stain with cold water on the reverse side of the fabric.

3 Soak in cold water with an enzyme-based detergent for 10 to 20 minutes.

4 Air dry. Never put grease-stained fabric in the dryer, as no washer can completely remove grease and this could cause a fire. Heat can set in stains that have not been completely removed. If the stain does not disappear, repeat the above steps if necessary.

Ink:

1 First test the stain removal process on an inconspicuous area of the garment.

2 Place a paper towel over the stain. On the reverse side of the fabric, pour isopropyl alcohol or spray hair spray onto the stain. Change the paper towel and repeat until the stain is removed.

3 Apply detergent or stain treatment and wash in water as hot as possible.

3. Learn more about your washer

You can change the water temperature from HOT-HOT to COLD-COLD. You can wash delicates or handwash items using the right setting, you can soak, you can disinfect your bedding, and much more.
